Tradición Vertical

Probably if you are from Granada you know well the traditions of the city such as Las Cruces de Mayo, an explosion of color and life for the city. These traditions are always accompanied by symbologies and materials characteristic of the Andalusian culture, with some exclusivities that only occur in the city of La Alhambra.

These unique characteristics made our students Virginia Fajardo and Antonio Rueda, from the Official Degree in Interior Design, consider the elaboration of a project to make the May cross.

With inspirations in the way of working ephemeral architecture in the Baroque, their idea entitled 'Vertical Tradition', is framed within a work that raises an abstraction of the culture that surrounds this celebration, reinterpreting the most characteristic elements.

"Initially, the project had been conceived for another patio. This made us think of the idea of parallel panels to enhance the perspective". Virginia Fajardo tells us when asked about the creative process of the project.

The final result is made up of four vertical panels in the form of serial planes that, together, form the Granada May Cross. Each panel is associated with a material:

Panel 1: Copper and Carnation.

Panel 2: Manila.

Panel 3: Bulrush.

Panel 4: Fajalauza.

Antonio Rueda tells us that "with this execution, we not only intended to visualize our idea, but also, thanks to the proportions used, people could interact with the final structure, increasing the user experience."

Thanks to the recommendation of Professor Venancio Galán, Virginia and Antonio ended up adapting and submitting this project to the competition to design the May cross of the town hall, winning first prize.
